Lost Forever

Lost forever:

on May days
like these
in the long grass
and the thick forests
where we hid
in imagined castles

under the covers
we travelled through space
the spare rooms
stacked with forgotten toys
cracks in payments
under the stairs

cowboys and Indians
starry nights
football cards
a thousand long-grass summers
rain falling on stone flags
the distant call
of the ice-cream van

from 1972
somehow transported
into this waking dream
of a day in May
where I must insist
on longing, searching
for the lost forever
