Lost Forever

Lost forever:

on May days
like these
in the long grass
and the thick forests
where we hid
in imagined castles
vampire-proofed

under the covers
we travelled through space
the spare rooms
stacked with forgotten toys
cracks in payments
airing-cupboards
under the stairs

cowboys and Indians
starry nights
football cards
a thousand long-grass summers
rain falling on stone flags
the distant call
of the ice-cream van

from 1972
somehow transported
into this waking dream
of a day in May
where I must insist
on longing, searching
for the lost forever
